Campaspe Shire cleaves $220,000 from Port of Echuca subsidy
Campaspe Shire has cut more than $200,000 from a subsidy aimed at keeping the Port of Echuca operating.
Increased revenue from the Port of Echuca and identified savings make up the total, which will see Campaspe Shire spend $1.4 million in the precinct in the next financial year.
The shire's draft budget had intended $1.6 million be spent, which had drawn criticism from the community,
Mayor Adrian Weston said the port, like all other shire assets, needed to be looked at critically to maximise efficiency.
He said shire staff worked down to the wire to looks at aras of savings and that the subsidy will continue while the council looks at an overall strategy for the future of the port.
Cr Weston said while the savings were passed by council, not all in the chamber were happy to see funding slashed.
'' There was a bit of robust debate and healthy discussion,'' he said.
