Target to Kmart

Target have confirmed which stores will be converted into Kmart Hubs

Target Country stores in Echuca, Kyabram and Cobram will be converting to Kmart Hub stores, as confirmed by a Target spokesperson on Friday evening.

It has also been confirmed the Deniliquin Target Country store will be closing, which will leave the town without a general department store.

The Kyabram store is expected to be converted into a small format hub store from September 2020.

The Westfarmers Group announced early on Friday morning that up to 75 outlets would close after a review found stores were not performing financially.

Between 10 and 25 large Target stores and 52 of the smaller Target Country stores are to be converted to Kmarts.

Between 10 and 25 large Target stores and the remaining Target Country stores are to close.

The company spent the day informing individual stores of their fate.

The company released a statement which outlined the future some of the staff across the Group.

"During this difficult time, we are committed to supporting our team. Across the Kmart Group we have made a significant effort to avoid store closures and retain our people and for impacted store team members we have the benefit of time to help find alternative employment opportunities. All team members in Target stores scheduled for conversion to Kmart will be offered the opportunity to join the growing Kmart team, for other affected Target team members, we will work with them to identify and offer other redeployment opportunities in Kmart, Catch, Bunnings and Officeworks as these businesses continue to grow. We believe that Target has a future as a leading retailer in Australia and we know it is loved by so many, but a number of actions are required to ensure it is fit for purpose in a competitive, challenging and dynamic market, including a smaller number of stores and a stronger online business."

Staff in the Echuca and Cobram stores will be offered positions at the new Kmart hub store, however staff in Deniliquin will likely be left without jobs as there are no Kmart, Catch, Bunnings or Officeworks stores in the town.
